Japan - Sweden Conference on
‘Challenges and Opportunities in the Aging Society’
Finished

Japan has the longest human lifespan of any country in the world today. In the last 20 years more and more people in Japan are living past the age of 75. It is reported that this number has doubled (by an increase of 1 million).
What kinds of experiences have different countries encountered when they have been faced with a rapidly aging society?
Japan is initiating observations of every nation’s efforts to deal with this issue. On one hand, Sweden is the first in the world to manage an aging population. The so-called “Swedish model” for aging societies has been dispatched to developed countries.
On the other hand, Sweden and Japan are culturally different and have different systems. The challenge of confronting rapidly aging societies corresponds to both countries.
At this symposium, 3 themes which we will consider under the subject “Aging society” are – the social system, medical care and the system for care-giving to patients, and new industries or aging societies.
Experts in both Japan and Sweden say that exchanging opinions and knowledge leads to successful research results.
In the world of the 21st century we are facing a confrontation between the world’s population and aging societies.
Japan and Sweden are cooperating to use all means to tackle this problem.
Universities, business, government, and citizens must take an interest and engage in this discussion.
