AGS (Alliance for Global Sustainability)

Today, mankind faces many challenges, often produced by the very advancements that have brought higher standards of living to so many today. With the intention of bringing about a more sustainable society, and ensuring access to development for countries still on that path, three universities (The University of Tokyo, MIT and ETH Zurich) joined together in 1996 to create the Alliance for Global Sustainability. They were joined by Chalmers University of Technology in 2001.

AGS aims to break down the barriers between the natural and social sciences and engineering, and also barriers across regions to bring the widest number of voices possible into the debate. A comprehensive approach transcending existing barriers is intended to bring about a debate on solutions enabling the permanent survival of human society on this planet, while maintaining the natural environment.

Collaborative research will focus on the topics of Climate; Resource management and human health; Urban systems; Sustainable processes of production; Energy; and Policy and regulatory issues. Education is also a vital component of this programme; the students of the member universities today will be the global leaders of tomorrow, and it is vital that the values of the AGS are instilled into the younger generation of researchers and students.
